City Hall dais during joint Santa Rosa City Council and School Board Meeting

The Santa Rosa City Council and School Board shared the dais on October 7 for their first joint meeting since 2019. The joint meeting held at City Hall centered around shared priorities regarding community safety, economic development, and workforce pathways for local youth.

“The success of our public schools and the health of our local economy are entirely interdependent. Santa Rosa’s ability to attract and retain businesses relies not just on the rigor of our educational programs, but on the holistic, 24/7 well-being of our youth,” said Board President Nick Caston. “Through the collaborative work of our two governing bodies, we are aligning our resources to ensure that student safety and academic excellence drive a thriving community where both employers and families want to plant roots.”

Through collaborative discussion, City and school leaders made a number of shared commitments moving forward. To help bolster ongoing collaboration for community youth safety, a SRCS trustee will be appointed to the City of Santa Rosa’s Violence Prevention Partnership.

Both governance teams agreed to move forward with a unique partnership that would bring together Santa Rosa City Schools, the City of Santa Rosa, Santa Rosa Junior College, Sonoma State University, and the business community. This partnership, referred to as a Santa Rosa Compact, will help align efforts and resources from the classroom to the work force to enhance positive student outcomes.

The Santa Rosa City Schools Board of Trustees and City Council will relaunch joint meetings on a regular basis to strengthen collaboration moving forward.

"A strong education system is central to Santa Rosa's economy and future,” said Mayor Mark Stapp. “Our City must work closely with Santa Rosa City Schools, Santa Rosa Junior College, and Sonoma State University to support our students and schools. The joint meeting of the City Council and School Board highlights both our successful current partnerships and areas where we can improve our collaboration for the benefit of the entire community."
