Program for Interns
Commission-approved intern programs offer a pathway to obtaining a preliminary teaching credential by allowing individuals to complete their teacher preparation coursework while working in a paid teaching position during their first year or two. This path is available after the candidate completes the required minimum of 120 hours of intern pre-service preparation.
An intern credential is issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) upon application from an approved teacher preparation intern program. This occurs when a school district, charter organization, or county office of education (LEA) employs an intern and agrees to provide the necessary support as mandated by program standards and regulations. The intern credential is the result of a collaboration between the Commission-approved alternative certification program and the LEA, with both entities sharing the responsibility for the intern's support and supervision while they are employed under the credential. An LEA may hire an intern teacher only when a fully qualified teacher is not available.
Candidates pursuing this alternative route to a teaching credential must meet all eligibility requirements, be enrolled in a Commission-approved intern program, participate in required support and supervision activities, and be employed as the teacher of record. For more information, please visit the CTC website.
The North Coast School of Education Program offers a focused program to support interns at Santa Rosa City Schools. Interns will be assigned a Mentor and will participate in classes at the Sonoma County Office of Education, which will help you meet the newly implemented state requirements for interns. For more details, please visit the NCSOE Intern Information.
There is no need to enroll separately in the Intern Program. You will be automatically enrolled upon applying for the program.
