The Migrant Education Program is federally funded and designed to help ensure that migratory children who move among the states are not penalized in any manner by disparities among states in curriculum, graduation requirements, or state academic content and student academic achievement standards

About Migrant Education Program:

Our mission is to advocate for and empower students and families who are eligible for the Migrant Education Program and reside within the Santa Rosa City Schools district. 

The Migrant Education Program is a federally funded program designed to ensure that migrant education students who move among states are not penalized by disparities in curriculum, graduation requirements, or academic content and achievement standards. 

We are committed to:

  • Ensuring that migrant ed students have the opportunity to meet the rigor of state content standards that all students are expected to meet

  • Supporting high-quality educational programs for migrant ed students to help reduce educational disruptions and other challenges that result from repeated relocations

  • Ensuring that migrant ed students receive appropriate educational services, including support services, that address their unique needs in a coordinated and efficient manner

  • Designing programs to help migrant ed students overcome educational disruptions, cultural and language barriers, social isolation, health-related challenges, and other factors that may prevent them from succeeding in school, and to help prepare them for a successful transition to post-secondary education or employment

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Migrant Education Program, the following criteria must be met:

  • Eligibility is established through an interview process conducted by a Certified Recruiter from Region #2 of the Butte County Office of Education Migrant Education Department

  • The student must be between 3 and 21 years of age

  • The family must work in, or have relocated to seek work in, agriculture, forestry, or fishing within the last 3 years

  • Young adults may qualify independently if they work in, or have relocated to seek work in, agriculture, forestry, or fishing

  • The type of work must be temporary or seasonal in nature

Programs and Services

The Migrant Education Program offers a range of academic and enrichment opportunities to support migrant ed students and their families:

  • Migrant After School (MAS) English Language Arts — This program supports and extends English Language Arts learning opportunities for elementary and secondary students, while fostering self-pride and cultural learning within the migrant and Latino experience during the regular school year.

  • Migrant After School (MAS) Mathematics — This program supports and extends Mathematics learning opportunities for elementary and secondary students, while fostering self-pride and cultural learning within the migrant and Latino experience during the regular school year.

  • Case Management — Supports migrant ed students 9-12th grades; grade monitoring, credit evaluation, referrals to support programs, and college and vocational career awareness. Services also include educational trips and college visits in partnership with district and region programs, as well as assistance with college and university applications, scholarships, and financial aid during the regular school year..

  • Credit Recovery —The program provides credit recovery opportunities during the regular school year.

  • Migrant Ed Summer School — This program extends learning through the summer and offers engaging project-based learning options.

  • Adelante — A summer program for 6th through 12th graders, run in partnership with Santa Rosa Junior College and the Butte County Office of Education Migrant Ed Department. The program provides credit recovery while celebrating cultural pride in the migrant and Latino experience.

  • Fresno State Summer Bridge — This is an immersive one-week residential program for incoming 7th and 8th grade students, run in partnership with California Teaching Fellows and Butte County Office of Education Migrant Education Department.  The program provides an engaging, college-like experience that supports students in transition through middle school and to begin preparing for high school.  Through dynamic academic enrichment, personal development, health and fitness, and cultural awareness activities, the program builds foundational skills, confidence, and college-going mindset at an early stage.    

  • Fresno State Summer Residential — This is a two-week residential program for incoming 9th graders through incoming 12th graders that provides an immersive college experience, run in partnership with California Teaching Fellows and Butte County Office of Education Migrant Education Department. Students live on campus and participate in health and fitness classes, English Language Arts, STEM, cultural awareness, higher education exploration, and structured university-life activities. The program is designed to build college readiness, confidence, and a strong college-going mindset, with continued engagement through two one-day follow-up field trips to two different universities during the academic year (Fall and Spring). 

Parent Services

Parent participation is key to the success of the Migrant Education Program. Parents are given the opportunity to develop or strengthen their leadership and parenting skills by participating in activities such as:

  • Migrant parent needs assessment

  • Migrant Parent Advisory Council (PAC) meetings

  • Participation in district, county, and regional conferences

  • Referrals to district and community support programs
